Welcome to Wenlock Olympian Celebration

Much Wenlock Square by Beverely Fry

2012 is an exciting sporting year because of London 2012 Olympic Games and it is an even more exciting year for the town of Much Wenlock because it is the birth place of the Modern Olympic Movement.

On Saturday 14th July the town will celebrate the 126th Wenlock Olympian Games with an exciting day of FREE entertainment and fun for locals, visitors and athletes alike, to celebrate Wenlock’s Olympian Heritage.

The town will be closed to traffic, and the streets will come alive with music from local bands and choirs, with dancing and plays. As well as this extensive free street entertainment, there are also many activities planned to highlight the town’s important Olympian heritage.

Come and watch the athletes compete; then follow the Olympian trail and discover the story of the man who was the inspiration behind the modern Olympic movement . Street performers and short plays will bring the era to life on the streets of Much Wenlock. A special presentation of ‘Much Ado about Wenlock’ is planned, along with other activities showing the life achievements of Dr William Penny Brookes.

The Olympian heritage is proudly displayed around the town with special exhibits in the Guild Hall. There are re-enactments of the old sports, a trial in the old court room, Victorian photobooth and much more.

Local crafters will be giving demonstrations of their crafting in the Priory Hall.

Join in with the Celebrations including music, dancing and street entertainment in the town Square and on the church Green throughout the day. The programme of events has fun for all ages - we hope you come and join us, and take part in this unique opportunity to celebrate our town’s Olympian heritage in this very special year.
